Afghan Diaspora

Who Are the Afghan Diaspora?

The Afghan diaspora refers to Afghan people and their descendants who live outside Afghanistan - one of the world's larger diaspora communities, with estimates suggesting several million Afghans living in countries beyond their homeland. The Afghan diaspora is not a single homogeneous community but a collection of communities shaped by when, why, and where people left: those who fled the Soviet invasion and the civil war of the 1980s; those who left during the Taliban's first rule (1996–2001); those who emigrated during the relative stability of the 2000s and early 2010s; and those who departed or were displaced following the Taliban's return to power in August 2021. Each wave of migration brought different people with different relationships to Afghanistan and to the prospect of return.

Canada - and particularly the GTA, which includes Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Scarborough, and other communities - is home to one of the largest and most established Afghan diaspora communities in North America. Naan Kabob exists because of this community: it was founded to serve Afghan-Canadians with authentic food from home, and it has grown by introducing Afghan cuisine to the broader GTA multicultural community.

Afghan-Canadians in the GTA

The Afghan-Canadian community in the GTA is among the larger Afghan diaspora concentrations in North America, with estimates in the tens of thousands of people. This community has built Afghan cultural institutions, mosques, community centres, grocery stores, restaurants, and professional networks across the region. Neighbourhoods in Mississauga, Brampton, and parts of Toronto (particularly North York and Scarborough) have significant Afghan-Canadian populations with visible Afghan cultural presence. Naan Kabob's multiple GTA locations reflect the geographic spread of this community and its customers, who span both Afghan-Canadians seeking the taste of home and non-Afghan Torontonians discovering Afghan food for the first time.

Food as Cultural Preservation

For diaspora communities, food is often the most enduring and accessible form of cultural transmission. Language may shift across generations; religious practice may become more or less observant; social customs may adapt to the new environment. But the foods a family eats - the specific tastes, smells, and textures associated with celebration, comfort, and belonging - tend to persist. Naan Kabob - Borderless Afghan Flavourss like Naan Kabob play a role in this cultural preservation that goes beyond mere food service: we are part of the infrastructure through which Afghan-Canadian identity is maintained, transmitted to children who may never have seen Afghanistan, and shared with the broader Canadian community as a form of cultural pride and introduction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do most Afghan-Canadians live?

The largest Afghan-Canadian populations are concentrated in the Greater Toronto Area (particularly Mississauga, Brampton, Scarborough, and North York), the Greater Vancouver Area (particularly Surrey and Burnaby), Ottawa, and Calgary. Toronto and its surrounding cities form the largest single concentration of Afghan-Canadians in the country, which is why the GTA has a particularly vibrant Afghan restaurant, cultural, and community scene.

When did most Afghans come to Canada?

Afghan immigration to Canada occurred in several waves: a significant movement in the 1980s during the Soviet-Afghan War; continued immigration through the 1990s during the civil war; a major increase after 9/11 as Canada accepted more Afghan refugees and immigrants; ongoing immigration through the 2000s and 2010s; and a substantial new wave following the Taliban's return to power in August 2021, which brought tens of thousands of additional Afghan refugees to Canada through federal resettlement programs.

How does the Afghan diaspora shape Naan Kabob?

The Afghan-Canadian community is both Naan Kabob's foundation and our extended family. Our founders, our staff, our recipes, our suppliers, and our customers all connect to the Afghan diaspora community in the GTA. We exist because this community needed a place that felt like home, cooked the way home cooks. Everything that makes Naan Kabob distinctly Afghan - the spice blends, the pilaf technique, the halal standards, the hospitality - comes from this community and from our responsibility to represent Afghan cuisine honestly and proudly.
